Esports remains a wonder of success and growth. If you look back a couple of decades ago at what the idea was, it’s no more than a couple of friends hanging together, enjoying a match or two, and betting who will lose and going to pay for the biggest award, a tasty pizza.
But, in recent years, it has ballooned into something else entirely, something that companies and governments have been increasingly interested in, and it’s expected that in the next couple of years, esports will have about 10% of the value of the whole sports industry.
The approach and nature of esports might be different from the rest of classical sports but the idea is there and the similarities and aspects of commonality are there to be seen.
So technically, there’s enough evidence to support the addition of Esports as a member of the sports family, but there are some who argue it’s not physically taxing as some of the most prominent sports historically, and so the things that shape the identity of esports can oppose what makes football or basketball a sport.
It is natural to expect such criticism, as it is a relatively new sport and not many people know its nature, especially since many still lack enough or a clear understanding of video games themselves. So, no doubt, those arguments will quickly slouch backward, and any rationality they bring to the table will gradually weaken in the face of the fact that this is, in fact, a sport.
So why it’s not in the Olympics already?
While many sports have disappeared completely from the Olympics events, adding new sports doesn’t happen frequently over a short period of time.
There could be multiple reasons behind that, Afterall, there aren’t that many new sports coming around every now and then, but when it comes to esports, the fact that it’s relatively new and there’s not enough awareness of what it is and its activities, is probably the major reason why there’s no rush towards adding it as an official sport in the Olympics.
is it a compelling enough reason? well, in fact, no, but at the same time, this justification cannot be denied to those who still take their time to learn and understand the nature of this sport. It’s no doubt slowing down the process, but the good thing behind this is the fact that it’s a temporary reason so to speak. The process might take its time, but eventually, everyone will get there, and the first step has already been taken, as it was announced that esports will be showcased alongside the main events of the Paris 2024 Olympics events.
One can only imagine the new shape this sport will take after such glamorous global acceptance happens, it will surely take it toward a new success, one perhaps it has never seen before, and that will lift the value of esports as an industry and entertainment sector in a way we haven’t seen before.
But with that comes the uncertainty of the future, the unknown awaits this exciting sport, even if it’s a guaranteed success, it’s still an unknown victory, one that might cause an unexpected turn of events.
It might sound disconcerting but it’s rather arousing curiosity and speculations or even excitement for what’s to come, and it’s natural for any situation of uncertainty to be accompanied by some form of negative thoughts.
Video games have always existed as a flexible, diverse medium that can produce art in different forms and budgets, and we fall in love with it nonetheless.
So, it’s probably no surprise it found its way into the mobile market decades ago, and sometimes it looked like the obvious expansion after the massive success some mobile titles witnessed. But, is it going to dominate the industry in the near future, and danger gaming as we know it?
Now, before we dive more into that, one thing always needed to be cleared right upfront: you have the right to enjoy any type\genre of video game you like, for whatever reasoning you are happy with, whether it’s to be amazed at the presence and design of a triple-A title or a fun and addicting mobile title.
But the idea of dominating the industry, now that is something else to look into, especially when it comes to mobile titles. You see, the general attributes of these titles are what makes them capable of dangering the other types and genres within the industry. Being cheaper to produce and easier to distribute, are great privileges over the remaining genres, whose production costs continue to rise.
To put this perspective in a different picture, you can always bet on having grand titles like God of War Ragnarök and Forza Horizon in the production pipeline no matter what happens to the industry, even if mobile titles took over the bigger cake, But, smaller titles like Stray (which was one of the best games of this year) might get squeezed in the scramble towards a new bigger venture towards the smartphone\portable market, and eventually vanish in the light of new investment measures that don’t see enough, convincing reasons, not to direct the attention towards the financially logical approach.
This may be an exaggerated simplified expectation of the future of the industry, but the exaggeration part seems to gradually fade away, after the recent statements from Phil Spencer, head of Gaming at Microsoft, who admitted that huge and popular titles like Call of Duty are not more important than mobile titles like Candy Crash.
And he seems to prefer to put the two within the scope of equality when it comes to near-future investments in the gaming industry, and their competitor counterpart, Sony, has already announced before their raising interest in the mobile market.
If the biggest players in the market believe it’s time to put more effort towards mobile titles and even select it as equally important to AAA games, there’s no doubt at least one trait of this industry’s future is clear.
But will the whole industry raise a flag of surrender that towers over the world with the “Mobile is the future” title? well, that will be the interesting, and perhaps worrying, thing to wait and see.
Trevor Noah is back again to host the next Grammy Awards ceremony, which will take place next February.
This will be his third time hosting the global event, marking a great achievement for him, one that is shared only with the singer and actor, LL Cool J.
The 2023 event will also be special for another reason, as it will be hosted once again at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, which was the main place for the event for many years (back when it used to be known as Staples Center) before the Corona crisis hits and forces some changes and major shifts, which seems to be over now.
Grammy Awards 2023 event will take place on February 5, 2023.
